About SARAL
India's Intellectual Edge, Not Silicon Valley's Shadow
Research-grade depth. India-native context. Global ambition.
The Thesis
India produces more engineers than any country on earth. Yet the institutions that define the frontier of deep-tech research remain concentrated in North America and Western Europe. India's infrastructure challenges - a 450+ GW grid diversifying under CERC regulation, data center corridors scaling to meet sovereign data mandates, industrial robotics deployment across manufacturing hubs - are not abstractions. They demand research that is native to the context.
SARAL was founded in 2020 by Dr. Sayonsom Chanda, who spent a decade at the intersection of power systems research and industry - from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Idaho National Lab to National Grid and R&D 100 Award-winning work. He saw firsthand that India's energy transition needed more than consultants. It needed researchers who could build.
Today, SARAL operates at the intersection of four domains - Energy, AI, Quantum Computing, and Robotics - not because we chase trends, but because India's deep-tech sovereignty demands capability across all four. Our research produces original publications, our academy trains the next generation of GCC professionals, and our tools - from Espresso to QuantumGridOS - are built on the back of that research. Every engagement is anchored in intellectual property that SARAL creates.
We are the only lab doing this work in India. Based in Calcutta, serving the world.

Approach
How We Work
Research First
Every engagement starts with original research. We do not repackage frameworks from other firms. Our publications, methodologies, and tools are created at SARAL.
India-Native Context
We understand CERC tariff orders, state commission dynamics, Indian load profiles, and monsoon-driven hydro variability. Our research is grounded in the specific conditions where it will be applied.
Publish and Ship
We bridge the gap between academic research and operational deployment. Our work is rigorous enough to publish and practical enough to deploy in production environments.

Dr. Sayonsom Chanda
Founder & Director of Research
Former researcher at NREL and Idaho National Lab. Recognized with the R&D 100 Award. Has worked with National Grid, utilities across India and the Global South. Holds deep expertise in power systems simulation, AI for grid operations, and quantum computing applications for energy.
Dr. Chanda's research lineage - from national labs to industry - informs SARAL's unique position: an institution that can both publish and ship.
